Notes: Compilation producers: Karyn Rachtman, Tim Devine. The soundtrack of CLUELESS--a teens-in-Beverly Hills comedy that is actress Alicia Silverstone's graduation from Aerosmith video babe to young Hollywood starlet--may be full of alterna-rock superstars, but is quite relaxed about it. The collection's shoot-from-the-hip attitude allows artists to escape their stage personas, glutton themselves on cover songs or just remix themselves silly. And while the faux spontaneity of the covers gets a little dry at times, CLUELESS also provides some out-and-out surprises. Eschewing grunge's moroseness, the compilation is centered around good old-fashioned guitar-pop for the mind, and varied grooves for the body. Supergrass sing about the joys of youth, Radiohead go acoustic, and Ian Broudie's Lightning Seeds come up with the brighter-than-the blue-sky "Change," the kind of catchy, jangly, McCartney-esque power-popper that Broudie seems able to write at will. For the dance-floor, the remix of Luscious Jackson's "Here" illuminates the disco strobe, the Beasties set a frenzied mosh tempo, and Coolio does his Cali G-funk thang.
Entertainment Weekly (8/18/95, p.55) - "...Like the movie, it is a breezy, lightweight treat that, at its best, fully captures the cruising-with-the-top-down vibe of summer vacation..." - Rating: B
