Gov't Mule's self-titled debut is a scorching set of heavy blues-rockers. Although they have some difficulty coming up with memorable original material, the band is loose, funky, gritty, and real. They have enough burning licks to make the record a worthwhile listen for guitar fanatics. ~ David Jehnzen
Rolling Stone (6/29/95, p.45) - 3 Stars - Good - "...this is the most exciting major-group offshoot since Hot Tuna evolved out of Jefferson Airplane in the early '70s....the Mule kick with a punishing metal force. Woody and drummer Matt Abts hammer out a bottom-heavy platform from which Haynes can grandstand..."
The Allman Brothers Band offshoot Gov't Mule combines the improvisatory aesthetic of jam bands with the heavy-duty blues-rock sensibility of classic power trios like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody, the band's founders, were both virtuosic musicians, and when drummer Matt Abts joined in, the circle was complete. Woody died in 2000, and rather than replace him, the band recorded two consecutive albums accompanied by a host of famous guest bassists from every conceivable walk of the musical world.
