Notes: Motorhead: Lemmy Kilmister (vocals, bass); Phil "The Zoomster" Campbell (guitar); Mikkey Dee (drums). Additional personnel: Bill Bergman (saxophone); John Paroulo (piano). Recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, California. 1995's SACRIFICE silenced any doubts that that Motorhead would mellow in their old age. After a brief, unsatisfactory tenure with a major label, Motorhead returned to an independent record company, CMC International, which was custom-built for elderly rockers. With alternative rock ruling the media, charts, and airwaves by the mid-1990s, Motorhead yet again refused to follow trends and stuck to their guns, issuing yet another set of turbo charged originals. You know what you're in for with such song titles as "War for War," "Sex and Death," "All Gone to Hell," and the album-opening title track. SACRIFICE proved once and for all that, like the cockroach, Motorhead could survive just about anything--famine, pestilence, line-up juggling, and switching record labels.
After he departed Hawkwind in the mid-1970s, bassist/gravel-voiced singer Lemmy formed the hard-rocking Motorhead. Referred to by punk rockers as "the only metal band that matters," the rowdy trio was one of the leaders of the early-'80s New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement, and an important influence on future thrash and speed metal bands.
