The advantage Rig Rock Deluxe has over other tribute albums is that, for the most part, we either don't know the original versions of these songs, or they're new. That, combined with the genuine fun most of these artists seem to be having, makes Rig Rock Deluxe a hoot. Don Walser kicks things off inimitably with "Truck Driving Man." He's a tough act to follow, but artists including (but not limited to) Buck Owens, Red Simpson, Junior Brown, Shaver, Steve Earle, Son Volt, and the Bottle Rockets do their caffeinated best. Only a couple of songs don't make the grade: Kelly Willis' "Truckstop Girl" for not using a pocka-chicka backbeat and Nick Lowe's "I'm Coming Home" for being recorded in Stockholm. The whole shebang winds up with Dale Watson, Rosie Flores, Wayne Hancock, Toni Price, Kim Richey and many others performing as Rig Rock Deluxe on "Six Days on the Road." Makes for a great ride. ~ Brian Briscoe
Entertainment Weekly (9/20/96, p.83) - "Awright! Proof that 20 years after his cultural apogee, America's highwayman can still inspire great music..." - Rating: A Q (12/96, p.164) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...this is wonderful, if somewhat repetitive stuff....Best heard blasting down the M1 late at night with caffeine coursing through your veins towards the end of six days on the road." Option (1-2/97, p.103) - "...a first-rate album. These are solid tunes with a unified theme....do yourself a favor and track down RIG ROCK DELUXE."
