Irma Thomas has been the undisputed Soul Queen of New Orleans for some five decades now, and while she has recorded for high-profile labels like Chess, Imperial, and Island, many fans mark her earlier work for the Minit, Ron, and Bandy imprints as her finest. This two-disc set collects the best of those early sides, tracked between 1960 and 1963, on one disc, and includes her 1976 performance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on the second disc, making this a nicely rounded introduction to this extraordinary singer. ~ Steve Leggett
Uncut (magazine) (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he second disc showcases a looser, jazzier Irma in concert in 1976, cutting a rug on 'Lady Marmalade'..."
Irma Thomas was justifiably bestowed with the moniker "Soul Queen of New Orleans," thanks to a string of 1960s classics that included "Time is On My Side" and "Ruler of My Heart." Thomas was never as commercially successful as the better-known women of soul music's golden era, but she is nonetheless a beloved figure among soul music devotees, having recorded with some of the finest songwriters and producers in music history, and she has remained a source of deep pride and inspiration for the Crescent City. In 2006, Thomas released AFTER THE RAIN, an album steeped in both the deep sadness and the gritty resilience of post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans.
