Performer: Original Soundtrack
Engineer: Matt Wallace
Distributor: Universal Distribution

Notes: Producers include: White Zombie, Filter, Polly Jean Harvey, Tricky, The Gravediggaz, Paul Leary, NY Loose, Iggy Pop, Pet. Includes liner notes by Jeff Conner. White Zombie's performance of "I'm Your Boogieman" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. CITY OF ANGELS, the sequel to the comicbook-inspired 1994 cult film THE CROW, tells the story of Ashe, who rises from the dead, after being murdered, with the mythical powers of the Crow. The soundtrack reflects the film's passion and darkness with a powerful lineup of punk- and goth-inspired musicians. Iggy Pop, who stars as the film's anti-hero (and who was the darling of movie soundtracks in 1996), offers a live "I Wanna Be Your Dog," White Zombie does a quirky take on K.C. & The Sunshine Band's "I'm Your Boogieman," and Hole goes moody in its rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman." This is a dark and brooding compilation, and also a thoughtful and worthwhile one. Audio Mixer: Matt Wallace . Liner Note Author: Jeff Conner. Photographer: Robert Zuckerman. Unknown Contributor Role: Kathy Nelson. Like its film counterpart, the soundtrack to The Crow: City of Angels suffers from the law of diminishing returns. Where the soundtrack to the first Crow film was a state-of-the-art alternative sampler, drawing from both mainstream favorites like Stone Temple Pilots and cult legends like the Cure and Henry Rollins, City of Angels is, by and large, pure calculated schlock. Most offensive is two ludicrously lunkheaded covers of late-'70s warhorses -- White Zombie's take on KC & the Sunshine Band's "I'm Your Boogie Man" and Hole's version of Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman." With all the loud guitars and hoarse bellows in the right places, both songs are embarrassingly predictable, humorless, and clueless. Compartively, Bush's "In a Lonely Place" and Iggy Pop's tired runthrough of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" seem impressive. Then again, the overall lackluster quality masks the excellence of PJ Harvey's chilling "Naked Cousin." However, nothing can extinguish the urban nightmare of Tricky's throwaway contribution. Even though he just hands in a relatively average B-side, there is more style, invention, and genuine menace in that one song than all of the angst-ridden grunge posturing that clutters the rest of the album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Spin (9/96, p.158) - "...rock's oddest and best [soundtrack] since BATMAN FOREVER..." New York Times (Publisher) (8/6/96, p.C13) - "...the album has promising one-shots: Hole's raw, blurting version of Fleetwood Mac's `Gold Dust Woman,' Grace Slick trading bitter blues with Linda Perry...and a song that moves Bush away from grunge imitations....Throughout the album, women howl and men glower..."
