Notes: THE DARK SIDE OF DEWEY, a tribute to Miles Davis, was originally released by the Japanese label Alfa in 1992. It was first released in the U.S. in 1996. Manhattan Projects: Carl Allen (drums); Vincent Herring (alto & soprano saxophones); Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Dwayne Burno (acoustic bass). Includes liner notes by Karen Bennett. Personnel: Carl Allen (drums); Vincent Herring (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); George Coleman, Teodross Avery (tenor saxophone); Marcus Printup, Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Steve Turre (trombone); Edward Simon , Mulgrew Miller (piano). Liner Note Author: Karen Bennett. Recording information: Power Station, Studio C (08/26/1993/08/27/1993); Sound On Sound Recording, Inc., New York, NY (08/26/1993/08/27/1993). Photographers: David Tan; Raeburn Flerlage; Mike McLaughlin; John Abbott . Arranger: Carl Allen. Despite the inclusion of Carl Allen's moody title cut, this tribute to Miles Davis is mostly pretty happy, with four selections taken from Davis' repertoire of the 1950s and early '60s ("All Blues," "My Funny Valentine," "Dear Old Stockholm," and "Just Squeeze Me") plus a few complementary originals by bandmembers. Trumpeter Nicholas Payton (even if he does not sound like Davis) and altoist Vincent Herring make for a potent team, while pianist Mulgrew Miller and bassist Dwayne Burno join Allen in keeping the music moving. No surprises occur, but there are plenty of fine solos throughout this modern mainstream set. ~ Scott Yanow
Down Beat (5/96, p.56) - 3.5 Stars - Good/Very Good - "...Payton...boasts technique that Miles never dreamed, and borrows smartly....the four original songs are fairly compelling...."
