Over the years, Irish guitarist Gary Moore has played everything from hard rock to fusion, but one of his first loves was blues. Moore was mentored and inspired by legendary British guitarist Peter Green, founder of Fleetwood Mac (in their original blues-rock incarnation). BLUES FOR GREENY is his tribute to Green, and it finds Moore lending his distinctive fretwork to a batch of tunes from Green's Mac days. Rather than try to duplicate Green's unique style, Moore makes the tunes his own, but for most of the album the famed shredmaster is more restrained than usual. Undoubtedly a sign of respect for Green, this sonic understatement serves the tunes perfectly, and makes BLUES FOR GREENY one of Moore's most musically successful solo efforts. Gary Moore's tribute to Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green, Blues for Greeny, is more of a showcase for Moore's skills than Green's songwriting. After all, Green was more famous for his technique than his writing. Consequently, Moore uses Green's songs as a starting point, taking them into new territory with his own style. And Moore positively burns throughout Blues for Greeny, tearing off licks with ferocious intensity. If anything, the album proves that Moore is at his best when interpreting other people's material -- it easily ranks as one of his finest albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The blues songwriter and guitarist Gary Moore, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, joined Thin Lizzy in 1977 at the request of his friend Phil Lynott. It proved to be a mutually beneficial move, as Moore contributed his guitar skills to the hugely successful BLACK ROSE album, and in return Lynott added vocals to Moore's 1979 hit single, "Parisienne Walkways." Moore's worldwide breakthrough came with the 1990 full-length, STILL GOT THE BLUES, which featured Moore's superb guitar work and gave new prominence to his confident vocals. The subsequent release of AFTER HOURS--featuring cameo appearances from B.B. King and Albert Collins--confirmed Moore's status as one of the U.K.'s most successful blues exports.
