Performer: Smashing Pumpkins
Distributor: EMI Notes: The ninth studio album from alt-rock icons Smashing Pumpkins, 2012's Oceania is the band's follow-up to their proper 2007 comeback release, Zeitgeist. Part of the band's long-form 44-song release series, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, the album once again centers around lead singer/songwriter/gutiarist Billy Corgan. Backing Corgan here is guitarist Jeff Schroeder, who appeard on Zeitgeist along with newer Pumpkins bassist Nicole Fiorentino and drummer Mike Byrne. Although originally intended as a song-by-song project, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope was slightly re-imagined for these songs into a larger full-length by Corgan. In that sense, Oceania is purported to work as a kind of album-within-the-album of the larger Teargarden concept.
Rolling Stone (p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'One Diamond, One Heart' sounds like Yes hanging in a German disco circa 1977, and 'Pinwheels' is folky moon worship with laser-show guitar streaks."
Kerrang (Magazine) - "'Quasar' bursts with the heavy, strafing guitars a Pumpkins album demands....For the first time since MELLON COLLIE, Smashing Pumpkins finally sound like a band with an idea of where they're going."
Before Smashing Pumpkins, alternative rock had yet to touch upon the grandiose arena rock of the 1970s. Leader/singer/guitarist/songwriter Billy Corgan composed songs that were somehow part Boston, Cure, Queen, and Jane's Addiction. The Pumpkins were rewarded by becoming one of the biggest rock bands of the '90s. Corgan broke up the band at the beginning of the new century, yet after trying his hand as the leader of the band Zwan and as a solo artist, he reformed Smashing Pumpkins with a new line-up. The band has been touring and recording since 2005.
