"Redneck Games," featuring Alan Jackson, was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. If your father walks you to school because you're in the same grade...you might be a redneck! If your dog and your wallet are both on a chain...you might be a redneck! If you think Jeff Foxworthy can actually sing...well, then, you almost definitely are. But the amazing cast of singers and musicians who help out the comedian on this musical outing--from the Beach Boys to Alan Jackson to bluegrass veteran Del McCoury--do all the hard musical work anyway, leaving Foxworthy to just go on telling his trademark redneck jokes, and they're just as effective and funny over rollicking redneck music as they are in conversation. Jeff Foxworthy attempted to expand his recorded repertoire with Crank It Up: The Music Album. The record was the first time he tried to make an album that didn't rely on redneck jokes. Don't worry, though -- there's still plenty of humor here. It's just mixed in with competent neo-traditionalist honky tonk and slick new country. Though there's nothing particularly promising about the music, it isn't bad, and Crank It Up: The Music Album is far from the disaster it could have been. ~ Thom Owens
Southern comedian Jeff Foxworthy has been dispensing folksy wisdom and blue-collar bemusement since the 1980s, and in the '90s he parlayed his catchphrase "You might be a redneck if..." into a still-thriving merchandising industry that includes books, videos, audio, t-shirts, calendars, and more. Foxworthy starred in his own popular sitcom from 1995 to '96, and is the leader of a loose collective of fellow southern wags called Blue Collar Comedy that includes Larry the Cable Guy. He is closely associated with the Nashville music scene, and has hosted his own country-music radio show and TV variety show.
