It implies that all of George Clinton's biggest solo hits, in their original forms, are featured on this compilation. Instead, Greatest Funkin' Hits takes Clinton's best-known songs -- not just solo hits like "Atomic Dog" and "Do Fries Go With That Shake," but also Parliament/Funkadelic songs like "Flashlight," "Mothership Connection," "Knee Deep" and "Bop Gun" -- and presents them in remixed forms. Sometimes, the remixes are good -- Coolio's take on "Atomic Dog" is fun, and Ice Cube's appearance on "Bop Gun (One Nation)" is terrific -- but often, the remixes are perfunctory and uninspired, making the album a tedious listening experience. Most importantly, it should not be considered in any way as a greatest-hits album -- it's simply another in a long line of pointless Clinton-associated remix albums. ~ Leo Stanley Greatest Funkin' Hits has something of a misleading title. Q (2/97, p.107) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...[Clinton] influenced...generations of funkers, rappers and hip hoppers, many of whom have sampled his compulsive brand of vibrant funk. Here, a gaggle of contemporary R&B heavyweights...check in to re-pay favours with rapping contributions..."
While his genre-defying classic bands Parliament and Funkadelic were mired in legal woes and personnel disarray, funk pioneer George Clinton finally went solo in the 1980s with a series of bizarre, colorful albums. Clinton shifted away from the organic big-group chaos of his seminal '70s work, and instead began to utilize all the newer technology, whether it be synths or samples, and inadvertently paved the way for the nascent hip-hop movement. The acid-fried funk on albums like COMPUTER GAMES and SOME OF MY BEST JOKES ARE FRIENDS may have taken its cue from the new kidz, but was still 100% George Clinton in all his funkified psychedelic glory.
