After the commercial successes of THE REVIVAL and SONS OF SOUL Tony Toni Tone returned with HOUSE OF MUSIC, the trio's most mature and critically lauded collection to date. The album-opening "Thinking of You" seems like a long-lost classic culled from the vaults of Al Green. "Lovin' You" is informed by Stevie Wonder's most sensuous funk, and "Top Notch" even has a bit of a psychedelic slant to it. The group continues to demonstrate its deft ability to craft sensuous ballads; "Til Last Summer" and "Holy Smokes & Gee Whiz" demonstrate a well-honed mastery of the form. Throughout, HOUSE OF MUSIC is spiked by sweet vocal harmonies and sharp guitar work.
Entertainment Weekly (11/15/96, p.72) - "...Their usual witty, tremendously likable collection, with a new recurring theme: what makes a man a man and a woman a woman, explored with both frankness and slyness." - Rating: A- Q (2/97, p.102) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...a startlingly diverse set that slips easily from the Stevie Wonder slow-strut of `Lovin' You,' through the Jackson 5-alike `Annie May' and beyond, taking in Memphis soul and Philly smooth en route to glistening swingbeat and seductive after-hours balladry..." Vibe (12/96, p.168) - "...the sons of soul....Brilliance shines like a diamond....HOUSE OF MUSIC glows a vision of blackness that is superbad, mad smooth, and crazy sexy." The Source (12/96, p.140) - "...This album was made for us...folks like us appreciate the richness in diversity...the music connoisseurs, those who are here to save the soul of Rhythm and Blues..." Village Voice (2/25/97) - Ranked #30 in the Village Voice's 1996 Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll.
