Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: n/a Notes: Producer/songwriter Jerry Ragovoy was one of the prime movers of 1960s soul. In fact, some of the greatest rock & roll of the '60s was influenced by the Philadelphia-based soul czar's work. The original versions of many '60s rock/pop hits can be found here, from The Olympics' "Good Lovin'" (made famous by the Young Rascals) to Howard Tate's "Get It While You Can" (later recorded by Janis Joplin), and Kai Winding's "Time Is On My Side" (Winding's version preceded those of both the Rolling Stones and Irma Thomas). Regardless of such historical facts, though, this collection teems with gems that glow brightly in their own right regardless of rock & roll connections, like Lorraine Ellison's "Stay With Me" and Miriam Makeba's African/Anglo pop crossover hit "Pata Pata."
