Milton Nascimento begins this poetic, mysterious album with a soulful, earthy, life-affirming percussion chorus that draws you into his intensely personal musical world. The songs on this self-titled collection are dreamlike and sensual, commanding you to follow where they lead. Where the natural world meets our dreams is where you reside when listening to NASCIMENTO. Singing about personal and universal love, the flow of life and death, and his native Brasil, Nascimento reflects an artists' need to communicate what he knows on "Paper Napkins": "There are pens in my town...being exhausted under thousands of crawling and confused words." On "Roxinol (The Nightingale)," about Nascimento's experience with severe illness, "Ana Maria" (a tribute to saxophonist Wayne Shorter's late wife), and "E Agora Rapaz (And What Now Man?)," loss of life and love are addressed as important aspects of living which cannot be escaped.
JazzTimes (9/97, p.81) - "...His voice, rich in range and emotion with a timbre deftly balancing deep resonance and soulful airiness, is purity personified. With NASCIMENTO he demonstrates formidable facilities as a singer, composer and musical poet..."
Milton Nascimento emerged in the late '60s as part of a new generation of Brazilian musicians and songwriters adapting the sounds of rock and pop. But even in Brazil, which has absorbed a wealth of musical traditions, Milton Nascimento is a unique artist. His soaring voice and plaintive songs have inspired and influenced musicians of all kinds who recognize the sheer soulfulness of his music, which at its best is both universal and deeply personal.
