Performer: Chicago
Artist: Lenny Kravitz; Dennis Wilson; Carl Wilson; Al Jardine Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: THE HEART OF CHICAGO 1967-1997 is a collection of Chicago's hits with two new tracks, "Here In My Heart" and "The Only One." Producers: James William Guercio, Roy Bittan, David Foster, Ron Nevison, Chas Sandford, Phil Ramone. The title of this retrospective speaks for itself. Here are the romantic classics from the group whose pioneering mix of rock, smooth harmonies and distinctive horn arrangements has become as familiar as butter and toast. The songs, ranging from 1970's "Make Me Smile" to 1988's "Look Away," are not arranged chronologically, which makes for interesting juxtapositions, such as the one between 1971's lightly funky "Beginnings," with its classic "whoa, whoa, whoa" chorus, and 1982's irresistibly sentimental "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" ("After all that we've been through/I will make it up to you/I promise to"). Thirteen of the 15 songs on THE HEART OF CHICAGO have been digitally remastered, and all provide an opportunity to revisit some of the best offerings from one of history's most successful bands.
Chicago was the longest-running and most commercially successful of the hordes of jazz-rock bands with horn sections that sprang up in the late-1960s wake of Blood, Sweat & Tears. After myriad personnel changes (including the death of founding guitarist Terry Kath due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound), Chicago eventually mutated into a more conventional pop group that was able to score hit after hit well into the '80s, usually with romantic ballads. They remain among the best-selling American bands of all time. In the mid 1990s they briefly returned to their roots with an album of big band-era standards given the Chicago treatment.
