Arrangers: Earl Brown ; John Oddo. Although a strong seller, Mothers & Daughters is actually among Rosemary Clooney's weakest of her productive Concord period. Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton is missing, the selections (some of which deal with children) are often overly sentimental and the jazz content (despite some brief spots for the reeds of Gary Foster) is nearly nonexistent; the occasional string section does not help. Clooney is in reasonably good voice (she was 68 at the time) and it is good to have the classic "Sisters" (from Holiday Inn) on record but some of the numbers (particularly a vocal duet with Keith Carradine on "Turn Around") are so sticky as to be difficult to sit through and it is strange to have the meaning of "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" (which is associated with Maurice Chevalier) totally changed. Pass on this one! ~ Scott Yanow From her productive Concord period, Mothers & Daughters is among Rosemary Clooney's strongest sellers. An iconic American vocalist, Rosemary Clooney often blurred the line between pop and jazz, occasionally even venturing into country and international styles. She started out as a singer with the Tony Pastor band in the 1940s, and her solo career started taking off at the end of the decade. Under the stewardship of Mitch Miller, she had numerous novelty-oriented '50s hits, but later on she dedicated herself to more serious, jazzier work, making some of her finest albums, like 1956's BLUE ROSE. Clooney was also active in films and TV (for a time she had her own television show), and continued performing and recording tirelessly until her death in 2002.
