Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: Ryko Distribution Notes: Out of the many reggae reissue labels that plied their trade in the '90s, none did it with more care than Blood & Fire Records. Choosing to use the fertile '70s era as a launching pad, (with dub being a particular specialty), B&F reissued classic albums by such legends as The Congos, I Roy, King Tubby, and Scientist. 2 HEAVY WEIGHT is a like an exotic musical buffet that offers up these and other important artists of the genre in a collection that runs just under an hour. Dub gets its due on this album on tracks that pair King Tubby with Glen Brown ("World Dub: Away With the Dub," "Version 78 Style"), The Aggrovators ("Higher Ranking"), and the Santic Allstars ("Shooter Dub"). All benefit from Tubby's organic-sounding production technique and generous dollops of reverb. Protege Scientist takes the control tower in a head-bobbing jam with the Soul Syndicate called "Dub Bible." Representing the early days of toasting are I Roy ("Late Hour," "Superfly Extended Mix") and Jah Stitch ("Jah Help the Dread," "Ragga Muffin Style") while The Congos stand in for '70s vocal groups with alternate versions of a pair of songs ("La la Bam Bam," "The Wrong Thing").
