Performer: Original Soundtrack
Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: Taken from the film of the same name, BOOGIE NIGHTS is a compilation overflowing with the "why worry" attitude of disco that is a perfect compliment to the rise and fall of fictional porn star Dirk Diggler. Hand-picked by writer-producer Paul Thomas Anderson, the songs are used as cues for characters like porn star Roller Girl (Melanie's "Brand New Key") who does her thing without removing her skates, and they sound like they were recorded specifically for sex scenes (c.f. the moan-filled "Jungle Fever"). The remainder of this soundtrack shows Thomas's nose for the funkier side of Marvin Gaye ("Got To Give It Up [Part 1]"), The Commodores ("Machine Gun") and McFadden & Whitehead ("Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now").
Entertainment Weekly (10/10/97, p.93) - "Soundtracks for '70s-era movies are too often loaded with the decade's usual camp suspects...but this porn-industry drama spotlights...refreshingly underexposed tunes..."
