Notes: Personnel: Chick Corea (piano); Gary Burton (vibraphone, marimba). Recorded at Mad Hatter Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Chick Corea. NATIVE SENSE (THE NEW DUETS) was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "Rhumbata" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Personnel: Chick Corea (piano); Gary Burton (vibraphone, marimba). Audio Mixer: Bernie Kirsh. Recording information: Mad Hatter Studios, Los Angeles, CA (1997). Photographer: Gildas Bocl. Composition and improvisation merge in a special way in the duets of Chick Corea and Gary Burton. Their association is long-standing, and here they work their magic on a new set of music, all composed by Chick Corea with the exception of Bartok's "Bagatelles #6, #2, and #3" and Thelonius Monk's "Four in One". There's a bridge between classical music and jazz which is crossed with vitality by these two master musicians. There's nothing academic about this music though; the tones of Corea's grand piano and Burton's vibraphone and marimba blend beautifully throughout and Corea's composition "Post Script" leads out of "Bagatelle #6" so seamlessly it's hard to tell where one composer ends and the other begins.
Down Beat (2/98, p.54) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "NATIVE SENSE renews a longstanding, very durable friendship....throughout, vibes and piano deftly support each other and smoothly exchange roles, carrying on a dance of their own..."
Chick Corea took the piano in new directions following the monumental achievements of McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans. His pioneering electric piano playing with Miles Davis helped shape the sound of fusion in the late '60s. He then turned to acoustic, free-form improv with the group Circle before forming the seminal fusion band Return to Forever. Throughout his lengthy career, Corea has drawn on bebop, Latin, rock, and classical influences to make his mark as both a soloist and a composer.
