Following in the footsteps of Sean "Puffy" Combs, Cam'ron created an accessible fusion of rap and pop that manages to keep some sort of street edge. Of course, that doesn't mean Cam'ron is hardcore -- he may come off as an East Coast gangsta, but his music is polished and melodic, much like that of Puff, his mentor. He happens to be a better rapper than Puffy, but he doesn't have the pop flair that makes Combs' productions big hits. Still, he shows promise on his debut, Confessions of Fire. Although it has too many songs and some blend together, he shows potential as a charismatic rapper and there are enough strong singles, including "357" and "Horse & Carriage," to make it worth a listen for fans of East Coast popcore. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine In 1998, the likes of Mase and Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz officially put uptown (technically the Bronx and Harlem, NYC) back on the map. Introducing Cam'Ron, the first MC on Untertainment Records, one of the newest heavyweight hip-hop labels. With his debut album, CONFESSIONS OF FIRE, Cam'ron shows off his versatile skills, mastering a commercial yet street sound. Songs like "357" and "Horse & Carriage" (which features Cam's close friend Mase) are definite club and radio bangers. Other joints, such as the lesson-teaching "D Rugs" and the touching "Prophecy," play with your mind, forcing listeners to think. With the secret lovers-themed "Wrong Ones," Cam'ron reveals his storytelling persona. And, of course, Cam'ron rounds out the album with hardcore cuts like "Glory" and "A Pimp's A Pimp."
Vibe (9/98, p.297) - "...Cam's glamour stems from his ability to lend charismatic quaintness to his clever verbals....Cam's debut is captivating throughout..."
The Source (8/98, pp.168, 170) - 4 Mics (out of 5) - "...Cam'Ron's a television junkie who sprinkles his music with more old T.V. references than Nick at Nite....Killa Cam's ability to bear his soul without sacrificing his sense of humor separates him from the norm..."
