Antonio Carlos Jobim's entry in Verve's late '90s JAZZ ROUND MIDNIGHT series is a fine collection of the more romantic side of the Brazilian singer/songwriter's work. More so than most jazz performers, Jobim's style of music is well-suited to the scope of the JAZZ ROUND MIDNIGHT series; his bossa nova is romantic, slinky, and at times downright sexy, which makes it perfect for late-night listening. The 16 tracks are well-chosen, and some thought has been taken to vary the selection from previous Jobim collections like 1990's COMPACT JAZZ. Often, the more lush instrumental takes are used over the better-known vocal versions. Of course, most of the usual Jobim classics are present and accounted for, including "Corvocado (Quiet Night of Quiet Stars)," "So Danco Samba" and "Desafinado." Perhaps most refreshingly, JAZZ ROUND MIDNIGHT is a rarity in that it does not include any versions of Jobim's overexposed signature song, "The Girl from Ipanema."
Antonio Carlos Jobim is one of the founding figures of bossa nova. Starting with his work with guitarist Joao Gilberto in the late 1950s ("Chega de Saudade," "Desafinado"), Jobim composed a string of unforgettable songs that combined subtle rhythms, modern harmony, and poetic lyrics, and which quickly found their way from Brazil to the rest of the world. His music has been performed and recorded by countless musicians, and by the time of his death in 1994, Jobim was widely regarded as one of the great composers of popular song.
