Performer: Bob Newhart
Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Recording information: Freddie's Club, MN; The hungry i, San Francisco, CA. Photographer: Don Bronstein. Former accountant turned stand-up comic Bob Newhart was something of an oddity on the comedy club circuit in the early '60s. His thinning scalp and trim, neat appearance belied a sharp wit and particularly askew take on the vagaries of existence. His stand-up routines usually took the form of omniscient monologues, sometimes from the receiving end of a phone conversation (a Newhart trademark), and the often hilarious commentary gave new meaning to what would eventually be known as a "talking head" THE BUTTON DOWN MIND STRIKES BACK!, Newhart's second LP, contains some of his finest skits. In "Bus Drivers School," he plays an instructor demonstrating technique. "A Private in Washington's Army" recounts General George's numerous escapades ("You know that dollar over the Potomac? He kept us up to three in the morning looking for the damn thing"). The wonderful "Retirement Party" visits his haunts of old-with perfectly sidesplitting results. Pick this one up on a rainy afternoon, and button down with Bob for some hilarious and accountable repartee.
