The two-disc Walking in Avalon is a rather schizophrenic affair, with one disc devoted to all new material and the other concentrating on live renditions of Christopher Cross hits like "Sailing," "Arthur's Theme," and "Think of Laura." The collection is likely to appeal solely to devoted fans -- the new songs are not of the same caliber as Cross' best-known efforts, and new listeners seeking to find those hits in their original format will be disappointed by the rather lackluster live performances. ~ Jason Ankeny The two-disc Walking in Avalon is a rather schizophrenic affair, with one disc devoted to all new material and the other concentrating on live renditions of Christopher Cross hits like "Sailing," "Arthur's Theme" and "Think of Laura." Christopher Cross shot to stardom with the release of his self-titled debut album in 1980. Cross's smooth brand of adult contemporary pop set the standard for the genre in the `80s, as the singles "Ride Like the Wind" and "Sailing" were a constant presence on the radio. Cross walked away with an unprecedented five Grammys for the album, and shortly after had another smash hit with "Arthur's Theme (The Best That You Can Do)," a song he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen for the film ARTHUR. The single "Think of Laura" from his sophomore effort ANOTHER PAGE cracked the Top Ten, but otherwise Cross never repeated the phenomenal success of his debut. He continued to record and tour throughout the `90s and 2000s, releasing the albums EVERY TURN OF THE WORLD and THE RED ROOM, among others.
