It didn't take her long, though, to begin plowing anew the fertile fields of modern song. OTHER VOICES, TOO finds her tackling tunes by estimable "modern" folk artists such as Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny and Ian Tyson, as well as standards by Woody Guthrie and Stephen Foster. Griffith's vocal partners on OTHER VOICES, TOO are a luminous group as well. Lucinda Williams lends her voice to "Wings of a Dove." John Prine duets with Griffith on "The Streets of Baltimore." Even idiosyncratic folk legend Dave Van Ronk joins in on this modern-day hootenanny, adding his trademark gruff vocal style to the traditional tune "He Was A Friend of Mine."
Rolling Stone (8/6/98, p.72) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...Griffith has assembled an astounding crew of singers and players to bring to life a rich body of British, American and Canadian songcraft....Griffith has forged an extraordinary bridge between folk tradition and the contemporary acoustic scene."
Nanci Griffith has been a shining light in the American roots music community since the 1980s. Considered the female equivalent of maverick singer-songwriters such as Lyle Lovett and Dwight Yoakam, Griffith made several stellar albums that blended country, folk, and twangy rockabilly (she's an avowed Buddy Holly & the Crickets fan) into a sound distinctly her own. The Texas native recorded two albums of cover songs that made clear her influences extended well beyond the Lone Star state, and in 2007 she released RUBY'S TORCH, an album of pop standards and ballads that further extended her grasp on vintage American music.
