During that time, Lyte remained remarkably unchanged, and Seven & Seven proves to be startlingly similar to the slick, R&B-influenced hip-hop she's been turning out since Lyte as a Rock. At times, that's not too bad, although the album has an exhausting 77-minute running length. There are good songs on the album, to be sure. ~ Leo Stanley Ten years after releasing her first album, MC Lyte delivered Seven & Seven, her sixth album. At times, that's not too bad, but the album's exhausting 77-minute running length makes the similarity of the material a little numbing. There are good songs buried in the album, to be sure -- it just takes too much time to dig them out. ~ Leo Stanley
Vibe (9/98, p.302) - "...Lyte unapologetically slices open the pop jugular and celebrates with old school funk samples and catchy hooks..."
The Source (10/98, p.222) - 3 Mics (out of 5) - "...Lyte's sixth full-length relies heavily on the R&B/hip-hop aesthetic that's currently ruling the rap world..."
While there were a few female MCs before her, MC Lyte, who dropped her debut, LYTE AS A ROCK, in 1988, was one of the first female rappers to impact the movement artistically and commercially. Her brash, skillful style earned her considerable respect from the male-dominated rap community, but Lyte took dead aim at that very community's chauvinism and misogyny. Though she made a few less-than-successful attempts at crossover stardom, her standing as one of hip-hop's iconic figures has never been questioned. In addition to music, Lyte has had a solid acting career and has done considerable work in the fight against AIDS and HIV.
