This College Park, Atlanta native began singing in her church choir when she was merely four years old. If you look at it from that perspective, the young singer is practically a veteran. She certainly sounds it on THE BOY IS MINE, a spicy R&B offering that brims with precociousness. Though Monica's got the vocal chops to carry the album alone, she's not afraid to expand the sonic palette a bit by working with a couple of carefully chosen guest artists. The title tune finds her in a duet with another young R&B sensation, Brandy, and the two women's voices make a perfect match. On "Gone Be Fine," Monica injects a little hip-hop into the mix, calling upon the substantial rapping talents of Outkast. Clive Davis himself co-produced THE BOY IS MINE, proof positive that Monica's talents have inspired as much confidence from the music industry as they have created admirers among R&B listeners.
Rolling Stone (9/3/98, p.105) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...Monica uses her honey-dipped, church-worthy voice to lift her radio-friendly tunes--and hopefully, the rest of contemporary R&B--to a higher plane..." Entertainment Weekly (8/14/98, p.80) - "The R&B teen diva's duet with Brandy ruled radio all summer, and much of this groove-driven disc...should keep her airwave run alive..." - Rating: B Vibe (9/98, p.292) - "...No longer encumbered by the extreme youth that made some of the more sensuous moments on MISS THANG vaguely embarrassing. Monica embraces womanhood with the full force of her raspy, resonant alto and flourishing postadolescent libido..."
