This appropriately titled album officially launched Neil Sedaka's mid-1970s U.S. comeback, which was initially jump-started, in part, by his song "Love Will Keep Us Together," a sunny tune that Captain & Tennille took to the top of the charts. SEDAKA'S BACK finds the Brill Building veteran performing his own version of the track, along with other hits such as the energetic "That's When the Music Takes Me" and the breezy "Laughter in the Rain," resulting in success that the Brooklyn-born performer hadn't seen since the early '60s. While fans of that era in Sedaka's career might not completely warm up to these bright, deliberately MOR numbers, the record proves that Sedaka could change with the times and still craft immediately catchy pop songs. After a good ten-year hiatus from the pop charts, Neil Sedaka updated his groove and found his way back with this 1974 outing, which made the Top 20 album charts. The number one hit "Laughter in the Rain" is the big ticket, along with Sedaka's version of Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "The Immigrant." Other highlights include "Sad Eyes," "The Other Side of Me," and "Our Last Song Together." This compact disc reissue also features the addition of four bonus tracks, "For the Good of the Cause," "Endlessly," "Love Ain't an Easy Thing," and the reflective "Alone in New York in the Rain." Strong songs never go out of fashion, and Sedaka proved it with this album. ~ Cub Koda
In the late-1950s/early-'60s Neil Sedaka was part of the compositional Camelot that was New York's Brill Building songwriters stable, penning hits for Connie Francis, Tom Jones, and others. It wasn't long before he began recording his own compositions and scoring hits for himself. In the '70s, a more mature Sedaka made a major comeback with a more sophisticated, Adult Contemporary sound, racking a batch of new chart-toppers. Others hit big with tunes around that time as well, such as the Captain & Tennille with "Love Will Keep Us Together."
