Polka king Jimmy Sturr is to his style of music what Garth Brooks is to country--far from a founding father, but the most popular contemporary exponent of the genre, responsible for bringing large numbers of new listeners into the fold. Unlike Brooks, though, Sturr always bows to tradition--there are no gratuitous stabs at polka-rock or other egregious money-making gimmicks here. Instead, Sturr and his band of polka vets turn out straight-ahead polka as it has been presented for decades. Guest musicians from the distantly polka-related worlds of country and Tex-Mex add a bit of spice, but even when the Oak Ridge Boys' vocal harmonies and Flaco Jimenez' accordion are absent and Sturr's band is making it's way through a joyous, two-stepping instrumental, there's an undeniable effervescence in the air.
