Performer: Cal Tjader
Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Recorded from 1979 to 1982. This is part of Concord Jazz's Concord Jazz Heritage Series. Vibraphonist Cal Tjader recorded for Concord steadily during the last three years of his life. This 1998 CD sampler has a dozen selections taken from Tjader's six Concord dates. These included sessions with his regular sextet (which includes the young conga player Poncho Sanchez), a straight-ahead meeting with pianist Hank Jones, and tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton, guest appearances by altoist Gary Foster, and two songs from his final effort, a date in which Tjader's group accompanied singer Carmen McRae. Highlights overall include "Bye Bye Blues," "Don't Look Back," "The Continental," "Guachi Guaro," and "Doxy." ~ Scott Yanow
Because he was a crossover success, vibraphonist/percussionist Cal Tjader received his share of derision from both sides of the jazz/Latin fence. However, his sincere interest in Latin rhythms and their potential for blending with cool jazz led to a groundbreaking fusion of the two, and a genuine hit with the tune "Soul Sauce" in 1965. An important conduit between the two styles, he helped bring percussionists Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo to a much wider audience. With practically a life lived on tour, it's almost fitting he was on the road (in the Phillipines) when he passed away at 56 in 1982.
