Whether the rather indiscreet presence of a toll-free number seemingly connected to gambling and tourism spells corporate sponsorship of this vaguely casino/gambling-themed compilation, or just maximization of opportunity, matters little. There's no denying the comfort Frank Sinatra felt in that milieu, as evidenced by one of his finest live albums SINATRA AT THE SANDS. All the songs here hail from the singer's esteemed Reprise years, and many are among his finest recordings. There was clearly something about the setting that appealed to Sinatra's sense of adventure and excitement, which is embodied in such bold, swinging tunes as "Luck be a Lady," "Pennies From Heaven," and "Come Blow Your Horn." On these, we can feel the enthusiasm and optimism that flowed from Sinatra. While the Chairman has extensively chronicled losers in the game of love, he didn't often dwell upon the downside of the casino life. Instead, LUCKY NUMBERS offers "That's Life," and "Pick Yourself Up," tunes where Sinatra picks a loser up by his shirtsleeves and gives him or her an extremely convincing musical pep talk. As a concept compilation dealing with an important aspect of Sinatra's world, this disc stands up well.
An icon of American music, Frank Sinatra defined sophisticated pop singing of the post-war era and spent more than 50 years in the limelight. After formative stints with Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, and others, Sinatra shot to worldwide fame through hit records and Hollywood movies. His hip, laid-back delivery defined cool, yet he also had a down-to-earth manner that connected easily with audiences. Ups and downs would follow him throughout his career--the details of his private life were not always fit for public consumption--but right up till the end, every comeback strengthened the intense loyalty of his fans.
