It's really not that difficult to hurdle the sophomore blues provided you're an excellent songwriter and performer, that you have the same, equally excellent producer behind the scenes who contributed to the first album, and most importantly, that you haven't tampered with the hit-making formula from the first. Thankfully, Da Real World is clearly a Missy Elliott album in most respects, with Timbaland's previously trademarked, futuristic-breakbeat production smarts laced throughout. The churchgoing Elliott has often remarked that she wishes she didn't need profanity to get attention, and the album accordingly includes satirical nods to other clichd notions of hip-hop -- the single "She's a Bitch" is the best example, wherein Elliott reappropriates the insult to refer to strong females. She also takes on the cartoonish Eminem for "Bus a Rhyme," a track that turns out to be one of the best on the album. Da Brat and Aaliyah make repeat appearances, and Redman and OutKast's Big Boi also contribute to this excellent follow-up. ~ Keith Farley With her debut album, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott proved that she could do it all--rap, write, sing, and produce. With her sophomore album, DA REAL WORLD, Elliott shows that she can do it again--and do it all just as well. Her singing talent adds R&B flavor to a great, bouncy hip-hop album. Elliott describes herself on the lead-off single, "She's A B*tch." She uses the term "bitch" in a positive way, redefining it as a strong woman who knows what she wants. The mellower "All N My Grill" boasts an empowered chorus of "why you all in my grill / can you pay my bills?" It is sure to be the next anthem adopted by Elliott's sisters. Backed by super-producer Timbaland, Elliott delivers the beats and rhymes like no other rapper. DA REAL WORLD also finds Elliott teaming up with some of hip-hop's most unique performers, including Eminem, Redman, and Juvenile.

Missy Elliott is a multi-faceted career woman. Not only a ground-breaking producer whose work spans the pop market (Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, TLC, Da Brat), Elliott is also a skilled MC. Her 1997 debut trademarked Elliott's cartoon-styled videos and stop-start beats (aided by partner Timbaland). Elliott also runs her own label/production company, the Gold Mind, which nurtured R&B singer Nicole into a gold-selling debut. Through the late '90s into the next millennium, Elliott continued turning out skillfully produced, sexually charged albums, winning Grammys left and right. While she remained in Timbaland's orbit, she expanded to work with other producers as well, continuing to broaden her sound.
