Notes: Polygram Special Markets' The Best of the Ohio Players may not be a definitive collection by any means -- "Fire," "Love Rollercoaster, " "Fopp, " "Sweet Sticky Thing" are all missing -- but get beyond that flaw and the compilation seems perfectly adequate as a sampler, since it does boast such items as "Skin Tight, " "Who'd She Coo?, " "Feel the Beat (Everybody Disco)" and "O-H-I-O." It's still something only budget-minded casual fans will be interested in -- collectors will have all the material and most casual fans will want all the hits if they're going to buy a hits collection -- but it's not a bad listen at all. The cassette version of The Best of Ohio Players contains three fewer cuts than its CD counterpart; it's missing "Funk-O-Nots, " "Good Luck Charms" and "Sleepwalkin'." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
One of the most important and successful funk bands of the '70s, the Ohio Players made effective use of aggressive horns and big, butt-shakin' bass lines. The group produced a wide variety of great, sex-savvy soul music, many of their biggest hits were sex-related novelties. Unfortunately, the Ohio Players are now remembered almost as much for their erotic cover art as for their music.
