First of all, Bob Fosse was not just any choreographer and secondly, consider all the great composers that he set movement to, including Lerner & Lowe, Coleman & Fields, Andy Razaf, Lalo Schifrin, Neil Diamond--you get the idea. This revue, which opened on Broadway in January 1999, features an energetic cast headed up by the dynamic Valarie Pettiford. Revved up vocal numbers alternate with mostly more atmospheric instrumentals. Highlights include Ms. Pettiford's sassy opener, "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"; the forever salty and swaggering "(Hey) Big Spender"; and incidental music from the film COOL HAND LUKE, a '60s Paul Newman star turn. If you've never been exposed to Fosse's art, this disc is certainly not the place to start (try renting the videos of SWEET CHARITY or ALL THAT JAZZ instead). But for some fun and razzle-dazzle with top-rate material that Fosse worked his magic movements on, this cast recording fits the bill.
