EPMD has dropped its signature brand of hip-hop funk flavor on the world for over a decade. OUT OF BUSINESS is an album that recalls the pure uncut street flavor of earlier efforts from Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith. Tracks like "Pioneers," "Symphony," and "Check 1,2," help ensure that the dynamic duo of hip-hop will remain strictly entrenched at the top of the hill. Produced mostly by Sermon, who creates a fusion of classic funk samples and today's hottest street sounds, OUT OF BUSINESS stands as reason why EPMD has had a decade of hits and numerous gold records. The pair spit verses like they did when they burst on to the scene in the late '80s, making OUT OF BUSINESS one of EPMD's deepest albums in years. OUT OF BUSINESS is also available with a special greatest hits disc that includes classic EPMD tracks like "It's My Thang," "Crossover," and "Big Payback."
Entertainment Weekly (7/23/99, p.68) - "...On their seventh - and grandest - album, EPMD dis hip hop hypocrisy while pumping the boogie..." - Rating: A-
Alternative Press (10/99, pp.88-9) - 4 out of 5 - "...[EPMD] rhyme as if the game's stakes involved neighborhood props insteadof major-label millions....Tracks...are so catchy and clever they practically dare trend-obsessed fans to ask for anything more..."
CMJ (7/26/99, p.30) - "...best album since 1990's BUSINESS AS USUAL....[shows] no indications of closing up shop..."
Vibe (9/99, p.271) - "...the album deserves praise and props on the sheer strength of the duo's favorites....As long there are rare tracks to be sampled and grimy, street-worthy lyricists to hook up with, EPMD will always be open for business."
Melody Maker (8/14/99, p.34) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "Rap works so much better when it's raging against the machine....undoubtedly tha' real deal."
Rap Pages (9/99, pp.171-2) - "...hearkens to EPMD's feel and style on their early recordings....[a] funk-filled ride."
Long Island-born rappers Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith formed the underground hip-hop duo EPMD in the late 1980s. Creating a sound and stance so self-assured as to seem effortless, they were among very few rap artists with the talent to pull it off without sounding lazy. EPMD did much to revitalize a flagging rap scene with UNFINISHED BUSINESS, an early outburst of controlled creative energy that sampled rock sources as well as underground dance music, working up a healthy, funk-fueled groove.
