To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Atari Teenage Riot
Producer: Alec Empire Distributor: NAIL Distribution Notes: Atari Teenage Riot: Alec Empire, Hanin Elias, Carl Crack. Following on the heels of Alec Empire's disturbingly brilliant "The Destroyer," 60 SECOND WIPEOUT is quite likely the closest thing to white noise with a beat that anyone's ever recorded. Tumultuous and bracing, it's a solid slab of digital brain-wipe, the sound of pure adrenaline. Samples, breakbeats, vocals, and a universe of noise collide in a chaotic, Jackson Pollack-like wall of sonic turbulence. Nic Endo's and Hanin Elias' slasher-flick teen-screams sound more like a police whistle than anything produced by a human larynx. This album is so noisy, in fact, that rigging up a fuzz-tone to your stereo might only enhance your listening experience. A thrilling ride.
Rolling Stone (5/27/99, p.66) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...one great idea - making punk rock out of computers..."
The Wire (5/99, p.48) - "...at once deadly serious and spectacularly funny, and for anyone who still craves the incredible, electric joy sparked by rampaging, righteous noice, it is nothing short of fantastic..."
CMJ (4/26/99, p.3) - "...ATR's most varied and accomplished work to date. The revolution is back in full effect."
Mojo (Publisher) (5/99, p.108) - "...they might not be bothering any charts, but Atari Teenage Riot '99 are a fearsome, adrenalin-powered beast..."
Combining driving techno beats with the musical fury and political sloganeering of hardcore punk, Berlin-based Atari Teenage Riot, led by DJ and techno artist Alec Empire, were at the fore of the Digital Hardcore movement based around Empire's label of the same name. Atari Teenage Riot viewed themselves as a vital alternative to both a politically reactionary dance music scene and a tepid punk scene in Germany in the 1990s. ATR/DHR albums were released on the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal Records in the United States.
