Photographer: Andy Earl. 80's pop metal demigods Def Leppard release their 9th album amid a hard rock resurgence primed and ready for the Lep's sound. With their previous album, SLANG, heading slightly too far in the alternative direction for longtime fans to digest, EUPHORIA is a welcome return to form. "Demolition Man" is a hard rock track reminiscent of HIGH N' DRY-era Def Lep. "Promises" is an infectious pop ditty featuring Mutt Lange on background vocals. Lange also supplies funky guitar on "All Night," yet the longtime Leppard producer takes a backseat to Pete Woodroffe and the band for this album's production. "Goodbye" is a wonderful power ballad from the band that invented the genre. On EUPHORIA, Def Leppard keep things fresh and new, while returning to the hooks and crunchy guitars that made the group a household name. The album is their strongest since 1992's ADRENALIZE, and well worth a listen.
Entertainment Weekly (6/11/99, p.68) - "...Def Leppard are back in a big, bad HYSTERIA-sleek way....the hooks...call the lapsed faithful back to worship." - Rating: B+
Q (7/99, p.106) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...a conciliatory exercise....there's a whif of cosy familiarity about the whole affair....those mocked by workmates for the length of their hair and cut of their jeans will be delighted..."
Before Def Leppard, heavy metal was associated with leather, studs, and motorcycles. After a pair of mega-platinum albums in the '80s, Leppard proved that pop hooks, hard rock, and good looks could equal massive success, hatching a slew of imitators in the process. Despite numerous setbacks such as drummer Rick Allen losing an arm in an accident, followed by the death of guitarist Steve Clark, the British band persevered, achieving even more popularity. Though they inspired legions of hair metal bands, their longevity is a testament to their enduring musical legacy.
