En Vogue laid the template for sexy, sassy R&B girl-groups in the '90s and 2000s with their distinctive mixture of old-school soul and funk with cool harmonies, and a stylish, MTV-ready image. They were also one of the first groups to fuse a hip-hop sensibility with R&B to commercially successful ends, and as such paved the way for acts like TLC and Destiny's Child. Arguably, though, En Vogue outdistances their successors with their smooth, effortless harmonies, stylistically eclectic sound, and strong material. The strength of that material is evident throughout BEST OF EN VOGUE, a set that acts as both a career overview and a highlights collection. The group's later, somewhat lesser material is sequenced in among their hits, but at their strongest--as on the killer "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and the Funkadelic-inspired "Free Your Mind"--En Vogue proves that they were the best at their game. Outside of their sophomore release, FUNKY DIVAS, BEST OF should cover all the essential En Vogue a fan could want.
Female R&B foursome En Vogue defined a new image and sound for R&B in the '90s. With the help of producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy (Club Nouveau, Timex Social Club) they combined a sexy girl-group image with '70s soul songcraft and contemporary hip-hop production techniques for a distaff variation on New Jack Swing that was termed "New Jill." They scored a number of big hits early in the decade and broke lyrical ground with "Free Your Mind." Despite time off for solo projects, En Vogue kept following their musical path into the 21st century.
