To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Bobby McFerrin
Artist: Jon Hendricks; Manhattan Transfer; Chick Corea Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: Personnel: Bobby McFerrin (vocals, percussion). Recording information: Capitol Records (1986-1992). Although this anthology is named after Bobby McFerrin's one chart hit, 1988's feel-good novelty song "Don't Worry, Be Happy," it provides a much broader overview of this exceptional vocal talent. One of the most unique jazz singers of all time, McFerrin moves beyond simple scatting into a sometimes otherworldly set of vocal sounds. Five live tracks include a pair of duets with Chick Corea on the duo's own "Even For Me" and the Thelonious Monk standard "Round Midnight," as well as a playful audience participation piece called "I Love Music." Another highlight is 1985's "Another Night In Tunisia," a collaboration on the Dizzy Gillespie classic with earlier vocal jazz master Jon Hendricks and the vocalese group Manhattan Transfer.
Although he'll always be remembered for his 1988 novelty hit "Don't Worry Be Happy," Bobby McFerrin is one of the most talented musicians in pop music. Possessed of a four-octave range and astounding vocal percussion skills, McFerrin has worked with artists as diverse as Yo-Yo Ma and Herbie Hancock, as well as numerous world-renown symphony orchestras. McFerrin, like no other artist, has managed to bridge the gap between pop and classical music by illustrating that the varying artistry and techniques that mark those forms are not mutually exclusive.
