From folk-rock frontwoman to California-rock solo smash, to new wave belter to standards songstress, Ronstadt has never rested on her laurels. Ronstadt began her career as a Stone Poney, and the band's Top 20 hit "A Different Drum" is included here. Linda's Eagles-inspired hit "When Will I Be Loved" is one of many fine cover tunes in the set. Linda gets tender on "Blue Bayou" and soulful on "Hurt So Bad." After closing out her rock era with the energetic "Get Closer," Linda starred in PIRATES OF PENZANCE, which inspired her to record three albums with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Ronstadt superbly interprets "What's New" and "My Funny Valentine." An entire disc is devoted to Ronstadt's duets, such as "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) and "Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville). The final disc contains rarities such as a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Tumbling Dice" (from the FM soundtrack) and "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (with Kermit the Frog). The range of previously unreleased material on BOX SET makes it an ideal companion to her GREATEST HITS.
Entertainment Weekly (12/17/99, pp.82-4) - "...four discs hardly seem like enough space to contain [Ronstadt's career]..." - Rating: A-
Linda Ronstadt began as the clear-voiced, country-influenced singer for '60s folk-rockers the Stone Poneys, where she covered tunes by the likes of Mike Nesmith and Tim Buckley. That knack for choosing material served her well in the second half of the '70s, when she became a pop superstar interpreting songs by everyone from Dave Edmunds and Elvis Costello to Chuck Berry and Roy Orbison. Subsequently, she showed her diversity by cutting albums of jazz standards, traditional Mexican music, and pure country
