Includes liner notes by Patrick Regnier. A tender collection of works by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vincius de Moraes as performed both by a variety of younger Brazilian artists (sometimes in combination with Jobim) with a touch of nostalgia. The key factor tying the works together is a respect for the original compositions here, so there are generally not a large amount of changes made. The compositions themselves are some of the best there are in the world of music, ranging from catchy dance tunes to darker sambas with political linings. There are certainly countless bossa nova albums available, with hundreds dealing with the work of these two classic composers. This compilation can sit easily among some of the better ones. The original performances from the composers and their inner circle would be a better place to start, but this one makes for a nice look at the views of others to the music. ~ Adam Greenberg While it's true that tributes to Tom Jobim and Vincius Moraes are a dime a dozen, there are rarely any that focus on their partnership period and none of them are performed by exclusively Brazilian artists -- except this one, which is now, with this issue, in its second volume. In addition, some of the performances on this recording rank equally with the definitive versions. There is a celebratory mood on this recording to be sure, but even more, there is an exploratory one by most of the artists here. From Baden Powell's almost unbearably moving reading of "Serenata Do Adeus," to his daughter, Nana Caymmi's treatment of "Canco Em Modo Menor," to Joyce's tough soul balladry on "Insensatz," to Chiquinho Timoteo's nearly modal interpretation of "Agua de Maro," one thing remains a constant: there are no nostalgic looks back on this volume (as on the first). The songs of Jobim and Moraes are treated as living embodiments of a tradition that has evolved to include new forms and textures. This is perhaps the greatest tribute a songwriter can ask for, to be considered relevant for future generations. ~ Thom Jurek
Antonio Carlos Jobim is one of the founding figures of bossa nova. Starting with his work with guitarist Joao Gilberto in the late 1950s ("Chega de Saudade," "Desafinado"), Jobim composed a string of unforgettable songs that combined subtle rhythms, modern harmony, and poetic lyrics, and which quickly found their way from Brazil to the rest of the world. His music has been performed and recorded by countless musicians, and by the time of his death in 1994, Jobim was widely regarded as one of the great composers of popular song.
