Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo Remixes is a sultry collection of dancey Latin American tracks. One of the things that's really great about Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo Remixes is that it you can almost imagine hot summer nights at some obscure Latin American club where half the club is relaxing, mesmerized by Bebel Gilberto's sweet-voiced down-tempo Latin tracks, and the other half is stomping out the luxurious polyrhythms that fully animate Tanto Tempo Remixes. It's important to mention that Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of veteran bossa nova crooner Joao Gilberto, whose work literally created the bossa nova genre, and at the same time brought then-wife Astrud Gilberto to the attention of America. This is an enthusiastic and lively recording that features the work of Mario Caldato, Jr., Peter Kruder, Rae & Christian, and many others. This is a great work; it has all of the ingredients that make up a great record: Bebel Gilberto's great vocals, fresh melodic hooks, nice rhythms, and most of all, a strong sense soulful passion. ~ Matt Borghi After working with artists like Caetano Veloso, David Byrne, and Towa Tei, Bebel Gilberto made her solo recording debut in the U.S. with Tanto Tempo, licensed for American release in 2000 by Six Degrees. It's an album of stylish, cool, contemporary bossa nova, with Gilberto's vocals a bit more assured and polished than Astrud Gilberto's classic and similar recordings of the '60s. The tone is restrained and subdued, simmering over the low heat of quiet passion; the instrumentation is mostly acoustic, although there are some unobtrusively electronic dance-club sounds as well. Overall, Tanto Tempo is a terrific, promising way for Gilberto to make her first impression as a solo artist. ~ Steve Huey Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Brazilian singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. TANTO TEMPO, her debut release, brings a contemporary sheen to classic bossa novas. Acoustic accompaniment predominates, with the addition of occasional electronica, making this collection a perfect reflection of the late-20th century two-way street between traditional Brazilian bossa nova and the American producers who covet its easy, sexy sound. Gilberto's voice is assured and steady. As with other South American singers gaining attention in the States, such as Peru's Susana Baca, she's a model of restrained passion, her phrasing subtly and sensuously caressing her music. Gilberto sings mostly in Portuguese, but performs a few songs in English, such as the dreamy "August Day Song." "Lonely" finds her paired with Washington D.C. downtempo producers Thievery Corporation, while the classic "So Nice" is still the perfect airy, breezy hammock song. TANTO TEMPO is highly recommended for aficionados of both classic and modern Brazilian pop. Issued the same year as Bebel Gilberto's first full-length solo album TANTO TEMPO, TANTO TEMPO REMIXES is, as the name implies, a series of remixed tracks from that debut. Bebel is the daughter of Joao Gilberto (the man who almost single-handedly popularized bossa nova), and has been singing and performing since an early age. Her ease with bossa nova and flair for translating it into a contemporary context is abundantly clear. For good measure, REMIXES features the work of top-notch DJs and producers, including Rae & Christian, Peter Kruder (of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame), and King Britt. Breezy bossa grooves dominate the set, buttressed by jazzy club beats and washes of colorful synthesizer. "August Day Song," remixed by Chateau Flight, has an almost techno/new wave feel, as does Kruder's treatment of the mesmerizing title track. Monoaural's downtempo, trip-hop take on the beautiful "Mais Feliz" recalls Portishead, while the samba-touched "Sem Conencao, re-worked by Sin Plomo, blends Gilberto's light, airy melodies with insistent, thudding beats. Gilberto's voice glides through these productions, losing none its charm for all the fancy dressing. Appropriate for lounging or dancing, TANTO TEMPO REMIXES is one of the finer Brazilian remix albums available.

As the daughter of Joao Gilberto, one of the chief architects of the bossa nova sound, and the step-daughter of singer Astrud Gilberto, perhaps the genre's most recognizable voice, Bebel Gilberto is at the fore of the second generation of bossa nova talent. While Gilberto's music is firmly rooted in Brazil's proud musical tradition, it is also marked by tasteful electronica and club music flourishes. Her breezy, sophisticated, and critically lauded 2000 debut, TANTO TEMPO, was given the remix treatment by a host of dancefloor heavyweights in 2003.
