DJ Touch has assembled an impressive list of guests (both rappers and fellow turntablists) on this sprawling disc of state of the art hip-hop. Too bad some of it is marred by homophobic proclamations and played-out clichs (how many more Scarface interludes can the hip-hop community tolerate?). Still, appearances by Gang Starr, Wu-Tang Clan, De la Soul, and Mos Def rise above the muck and elevate Touch's skills above the pedestrian paths they sometimes take. ~ Michael Gallucci Hip-hop icon Tony Touch has been a b-boy since the age of 15, and by 1991 his mix tapes had won him international fame. On THE PIECE MAKER, his first commercial mix tape, the turnout of artists collaborating with Touch is a tribute to his skills and the respect he commands within the hip-hop community. Tracks like "Basics," from Prodigy of Mobb Deep, "The Abduction," from GZA, RZA, Masta Killah, Inspectah Deck & Ghostface Killah, and "Pit Fight," including Greg Nice & Psycho Les of the Beatnuts, are instant street classics. The old-school "Class of '87" features Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap & KRS-One, while other guest MC's include Eminem ("Get Back"), D.I.T.C ("The Club"), Gang Star ("The Piece Maker"), and Flipmode Squad ("Set It on Fire"). Touch uses his mix skills to make THE PIECE MAKER one of the better mix/compilation albums to come out in a while.
Rolling Stone (6/8/00, pp.124-6) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Bouncy and intelligent....A diverse battalion of lyrical heavyweights works all the angles....reminding us why Tony is a street legend - he gives people what they want."
CMJ (5/1/00, p.30) - "...Inundated with jaw-dropping cameos and collaborations from some of the hottest names in hip-hop..."
Vibe (5/00, p.178) - "...'Tony Toca' flexes his skills on the 1's and 2's as well as on the production board and the mike....the big guns...show up ready to party - dropping punchline-filled knockout verses over Tony's mercilessly pounding melodies..."
The Source (6/00, pp.216-18) - 4 mics out of 5 - "...Touch does the mic justice....with Touch applying his trademark sound, you'll have a difficult time finding any major leaks. This opus sounds like the best of [his] mixtapes - and is long overdue."
Rap Pages (7/00, p.55) - "...Flows like liquid with strong contributions from Total's Pam and Keisha, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, KRS-One, Cypress Hill, The Likwit Crew and Eminem..."
