An in-depth 18-track overview of the career of soul-jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis, demonstrating his range from hard bop stylist to his later easy listening jazz interpretations. Part of the Verve Finest Hour series, this well-presented album is a fine introduction to the artist at an affordable price. ~ Zac Johnson
Pianist Ramsey Lewis first gained fame via his trio's 1965 recording THE IN CROWD. The group covered jazz standards and modern pop tunes with equal interest, and in the '70s, Ramsey struck further gold with his electric piano work in the jazz-funk realm. Later years found him an ambassador of jazz, hosting both a weekly TV program on BET and a syndicated radio series.
