Performer: Sonny & Cher
Producer: Mark Pinkus (Compilation)
Distributor: WEA Strategic Marketing

Notes: Personnel: Sonny Bono (vocals). Liner Note Author: Julee Stover. Despite the poor design and cheapo look of Rhino Flashbacks' Sonny & Cher collection titled I Got You Babe & Other Hits, it turns out to be a very nice disc musically. Both of the duo's chart smashes are here (1965's number one hit "I Got You Babe" and 1967's number six "The Beat Goes On") as well as eight other singles that placed in the Top 60 between 1965 and 1968. The collection omits "Baby Don't Go," their number eight hit from 1965, but other than that, the disc is all a casual Sonny & Cher fan might want or need. To get a more complete picture of their unique contribution to the music of the '60s, turn to the longer-running but still inexpensive The Beat Goes On: The Best of Sonny & Cher on Rhino. ~ Tim Sendra
Although touted as the misunderstood young lovers of 1965 folk-rock, Sonny Bono and Cher were not all their image suggested. Bono had a history in the music business stretching back to the late '50s, and became romantically attached to Cher, who was working as a backing singer. The duo found fame with 1965's transatlantic number 1, "I Got You Babe," and followed it up, as both a duo and soloists, with a formidable passel of hit singles. In the '70s they hosted their own television variety show, and Cher enjoyed a phenomenally successful acting and singing career, while Bono became a successful politician before dying in a skiing accident in 1998.
