Disc: 1
To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: War
Producer: Mark Pinkus (Compilation) Distributor: WEA Strategic Marketing Notes: Audio Remasterer: Chris Clarke. Like all other releases from Rhino's budget-line Flashback division, this disc is limited to ten songs and is packaged in remarkably bad graphic design. And, like a very high percentage of Flashback's releases, the disc plays fast and loose with its subject's back catalog, including a few crucial hits but leaving several out in favor of lesser singles and album cuts. Cisco Kid and Other Hits contains "The Cisco Kid," "All Day Music," and "Why Can't We Be Friends," but no introduction to War is recommendable when "Low Rider," "Spill the Wine," "The World Is a Ghetto," and "Galaxy" (just to name a few) are not included. ~ Andy Kellman
First as a backing band for Eric Burdon, and then on its own, multi-cultural band War played true "world music" years before the term was coined. The group pioneered a blend of soul, R&B, funk, Latin, jazz and African music, and even managed to have several hit singles along the way. Harmonica player Lee Oskar recorded several notable solo albums as well.
