An almost perfect snapshot of commercial pop music circa the dawn of the Millenium. For loud guitar lovers, alt-rockers Third Eye Blind check in with "Never Let You Go," convincingly recycling the chords from Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane"; "Falls Apart," the Sugar Ray track immediately following, makes such a seamless segue you might think they're the same song. Boy bands are favorably represented by LSO and 'N Sync. From the Department Of Too Much Soul there's Christina Aguilera's tantalizing ode "Genie in a Bottle" (her body says yes, but her heart says no), while other highlights include Missy Elliot's "Hot Boyz," a slow dance track in which she's as turned on by the titular young men as she is by Platinum Visa cards, and Lou Bega's ubiquitous "Mambo No. 5" (yes, it's the same tune as the theme to I DREAM OF JEANNIE). In addition there are two movie songs: Madonna's amusingly psychedelic '60s pastiche "Beautiful Stranger" from the second AUSTIN POWERS movie, and R.E.M.'s majestic "The Great Beyond" from MAN IN THE MOON; while "Amazed," a power ballad by the country band Lonestar, features the let's-get-metaphysical lyric "I can see your thoughts, I can hear your dreams."
