To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Sister Sledge
Producer: Mark Pinkus (Compilation); Patrick Milligan (Compilation) Distributor: WEA Strategic Marketing Notes: Liner Note Author: Julee Stover. Not to be confused with Sister Sledge's studio album of the same name, this 2005 compilation from Collectables contains nine of the group's chart hits, but it's too far from complete to be considered a qualified introduction of any merit. "We Are Family," "All American Girls," "Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me," and "Frankie" are included. Must-haves "He's the Greatest Dancer" and "Lost in Music" are not, along with album cuts that should have at least been considered. Part of Collectables' Priceless Collection series, its blow on the wallet is almost nonexistent, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the disc is a bargain. ~ Andy Kellman Featuring ten of Sister Sledge's most well-known hits during the peak of their career in the '70s, We Are Family is a lukewarm survey of their disco heyday including some of their fan favorites and a few urban downtempo numbers. "He's the Greatest Dancer" and the Chic-produced "Lost in Music" are both inexplicably absent from this collection, making this a rather incomplete anthology. But those looking for just the hits at an economically sensible price would be well served by checking this out. ~ Rob Theakston
Like many R&B artists, Philadelphia's four Sledge sisters got their start singing gospel at their local church, and, as Sister Sledge, enjoyed a brief spurt of acclaim when a 1975 single graced the lower regions of the U.S. pop and dance charts. It wasn't until '79 that they burst into the public awareness in a big way with the Niles Rodgers-produced "He's the Greatest Dancer" and the anthemic "We Are Family," a classic and oft-played staple of the disco era (not to mention the beloved theme song of the 1979 world champion Pittsburgh Pirates). Soon after, the Rodgers connection ended. The sisters continued to release albums into the '90s, but never quite regained their standing on the charts.
