The music ranges from the fast and frantic to the slower and more plodding, all delivered with a style that showcases the group's originality and unique sound. They seem to lose their sense of direction occasionally, but overall this one is quite a cohesive and even CD. Highlights of the album include "All There Is Fear," "Firelight," and "Pandemonium." CMJ (6/26/00, p.34) - "...Responsible for coining the term 'black metal'....packed with more current-sounding, moshable riffs."
One of the original bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that sprang up in the late 1970s, Venom played a menacingly fast style of black metal that would be ripped off by bands from across the metal spectrum in the decades to follow. The band's bountiful use of satanic imagery was inspired by Black Sabbath but took on a life and style all its own, as best displayed on albums such as WELCOME TO HELL and BLACK METAL. In short, Venom were every parent's worst nightmare and every disaffected metalhead's dream come true. Although infamous frontman Cronos left the band in the late 1980s, Venom soldiered on, with Cronos returning years later to lead the devil's hordes into the new millennium.
