Marisa Monte, a star in her native Brazil, is of the generation of performers who carry on the tradition of classic samba and bossa nova while absorbing the sounds of pop and rock music from around the world. The production by Monte and guitarist Arto Lindsay is rich, dreamy and sumptuous, tastfully framing and elevating her sultry, joyous alto. "Perdao Voce" unites the classic bossa nova sound of Antonio Carlos Jobim with the lush, contemplative sound of late '60s Beach Boys (think "Darlin' or "Wild Honey"). "Tema De Amor" and "Nao Va Embora" are rhythmically driven by loping, good-time '70s R&B/funk (War, Rufus/Chaka Khan); the latter has a great "psychedelic soul" sound courtesy of some phased electric sitars. The sparse yet sultry voice-and-piano "Abololo" evokes a romantic tropical night in a Brazilian nightclub, when it's close to closing time. The majestic "O Que Me Importa" sounds like a great lost late '60s pop gem that Aretha Franklin or Dusty Springfield could've done. Funk dances with samba, fuzzed and burred electric guitars chill alongside delicate flutes and strings, the cosmopolitan past, present, and maybe the future of Sao Paulo and Paris and New York intersect. MEMORIES, CHRONICLES & DECLARATIONS may indeed be the PET SOUNDS or DUSTY IN MEMPHIS of Brazilian pop.
CMJ (9/4/00, p.27) - "...[She] is a modern diva of Brazilian song, with a fiery and supple vocal instrument that demands attention and commands respect..."
Down Beat (3/01, p.74) - 4 out of 5 - "...Anunderstated delight....Lush orchestrations, psychedelia, fuzztone guitar and mysterious studio noises simmer underneath a collection of deeply romantic odes..."
JazzTimes (12/00, p.94) - "...Another Brazilian beauty - with just enough quirks to keep tradtion on edge..."
In the 1990s, a resurgence of smart, tasteful, and artistically adventurous Brazilian pop hearkened to the bossa nova and tropicalia movements that had seduced the world several decades earlier, if not stylistically then in its reach and influence. One of the luminaries of that renaissance was Marisa Montes, whose gorgeous, classically trained vocals and guitar playing gave life to exciting collaborations with Carlinhos Brown (including TRIBALISTAS, the acclaimed 2002 album recorded with Brown and Arnaldo Antunes), Arto Lindsay, and other Brazilian musical stars. Combining samba, soul, reggae, bossa nova, and pure pop, Monte has crafted a unique take on Brazilian music that has resulted in several international hit recordings and a still thriving career.
