Nicely assembled party set, to say the least, with some interesting choices: remixes of Bob Marley, Cher, and Paula Cole are worked in with Filter, Moby, and Vengaboys. DJ Skribble's mixing is precise, matching tone as well as bpm, something that adds to the experience of an album like this. For what it is, it's good. ~ Steven McDonald Though DJ Skribble gained street credibility early in his career for his prowess as a hip-hop DJ, he quickly left the margins for the much more profitable mainstream, and who's to say him nay? Commercial dance music can certainly use all the classing-up it can get, so ESSENTIAL DANCE stands as a valuable entry point to user-friendly dance mixes for those who might be reticent about such things. As for pop-dance enthusiasts, they'll be overjoyed by the skill Skribble utilizes in putting together his party-oriented mixes. Some of the songs he uses may seem overly familiar (Cher's "Believe," Moby's "Bodyrock"), but Skribble's so adept at transforming everything he touches into a new, eminently danceable form, that it's not really an issue. Underground heads may have little use for ESSENTIAL DANCE, but the dance-hungry masses will return to this album again and again.
